Backlinks are the foundation of PageRank. The more backlinks you get to your page, the higher PR your page will become. One of the key methods to improving your PR is improving both the quantity and quality of your backlinks. How do you improve the quantity of your backlinks? How do you determine what is a quality backlink?

Google determines the quality and importance of a web page through an algorithm named PageRank. The higher your site's PageRank is, the more backlinks your site has from quality pages. Furthermore, the more backlinks you have increases your Search Engine Rankings. This means that your site will get more exposure which in turn translates to more site traffic. A high page rank is an objective that most web masters aim to achieve for their web pages. Webmasters must not neglect their backlinks.

The Role of Backlinks in Determining Page Rank

Google uses a standard page rank algorithm to rate the quality and importance of the web pages it has in its index. This page rank algorithm is composed of the factors that Google deems contributory to a web page's quality. One of these factors is the quantity and quality of backlinks.

Backlinks, or one-way links, are those links found in other web sites and web pages that bring the searcher to your site when clicked. Google page rank algorithm designers think that the more links there are that point back towards your site, the more useful to searchers your site must be. You may not agree, but you have absolutely no say in this matter.

Increasing Page Rank through Backlinks

To increase your site's page rank rating, you need to actively build backlinks. The natural way of doing this is by displaying wonderful content that other web masters will simply find irresistible. When you have interesting content, other webmasters will solicit them from you. You will gladly give your blessings, of course, because your backlinks go where your content does.

Most webmasters also do reciprocal linking. Reciprocal linking is the web masters' version of "tit for tat" and "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine." In a nutshell, two web masters simply exchange links to each other's web site. If you do this, you will gain a backlink and the other web master will gain one as well.

There are also some web site builders who take advantage of blogs and message boards to give their web pages a high-relevance rating. They post their web site links in these blogs and message boards to increase their page rank rating. To counter this deceitfulness, Google then executed the "rel=nofollow" scheme, which allows the message-board administrators to put in the "rel=nofollow" code to each hyperlink posted in the message board. Thus, spamdexing or word spamming opportunities decreased.

There are other methods of increasing your backlinks and some of them are quite unethical. However, remember that more important than the quantity of your backlinks is the quality of these backlinks. In layman's terms, you should be selective of the sites you choose to display your backlinks on. Google gives greater weight to backlinks if these originate from web sites related to your site's products and services. Thus, if your web site is a car rental portal, a link from another car rental web site or a car rental web directory will do more for you than numerous backlinks from men's clothing web site and other unrelated sites. Moreover, backlinks that originate from pages with high page rank rating contribute more to your own page rank than backlinks from pages with low page rank rating.
